How Jacob Young's killer instincts landed him another Emmy nod

A last-minute decision may have been just the thing that tipped the Daytime Emmy scale in Jacob Young's favor, landing him as The Bold and the Beautiful's sole nominee in the Outstanding Supporting Actor category.

It sure is a good time to be The Bold and the Beautiful's Jacob Young (Rick Forrester). The talented actor welcomed a new baby girl into the world last weekend, and he just found out he's been nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actor category for the 2016 Daytime Emmy Awards. Soap Central caught up with the blessed actor, who is currently in Utah with his family, to get his reaction to the good news.

soapcentral.com: Hi Jacob, and congratulations! Did you see the big news on The Talk today?

Jacob Young: No, actually. I was sitting here waiting to get my car repaired, so I was stuck in the service department. I knew they were coming out, but the show called me, and right after that I started getting congratulation texts. So I was just sitting here and didn't get to watch The Talk because I'm in Utah, and I'll be sitting here waiting for my car for another hour or so.

soapcentral.com: Well, I'll bet you're the happiest guy who has ever sat in a car repair shop, I'll tell you that!

Young: [Laughs] Pretty much! Nothing can get me down today.

soapcentral.com: Have you had a chance to call family or friends yet?

Young: Not yet, actually. I spoke with the show and then started doing interviews. But I'll get this knocked out and then be able to spend time with the family and friends.

soapcentral.com: What scenes did you end up submitting this year?

Young: So the first one was the reveal with Maya [Karla Mosley] and Rick, which I thought were really stand-alone. It was a stand-alone episode. And I thought Karla was really amazing, as well. Unfortunately she wasn't nominated, and I wish she was because her work was exceptional. The second show, I wanted to change up everything and give it a different feeling, because I had another show that was more of the sad stuff, and I didn't want to do more sad stuff and knew I needed more diversity, so I used the episode where Ridge [Thorsten Kaye] and Caroline [Linsey Godfrey] were in the design office, and Rick catches them and pulls his gun on them. And I just thought they were fun and a different take on my character. I felt they would resonate in a different way, and I'm so glad that it did.

soapcentral.com: I feel like you must have had such a hard time narrowing it down, because you had so much great material last year.

Young: There was a lot of good material. I'm such a perfectionist, so if I do something that's not right or feel it's not right, or if I go, "Well that moment wasn't there," it's like the house of cards falls for me, everything. I'm really particular, and so I was able to narrow it down to like four or five episodes total for everything, and I chose a different episode for the second [scene] and then right at the last wire, I called and said, "Put it back to what it was! I've got a gut feeling." So they listened and edited it down and I'm so glad they did.

soapcentral.com: Well, you've been doing this for so many years, so I can see how you've learned to trust your gut. And it paid off!

Young: And our show publicity was there as well and heard me [deliberating about it]. I had a stomachache over it. So I'm so glad we were able to sort it out.

soapcentral.com: What do you think about your competition this year?

Young: I know Steve [Burton, Dylan, The Young and the Restless] and Bryton [James, Devon Winters, Y&R] very well. They're both very talented guys, and honestly, for me, it's an honor to be nominated. All of us put so much freaking work into this stuff every single year, and I would not be disappointed if any one of those guys [won]. It's an honor to be nominated against them. They're all very talented, and I'm incredibly happy. And I watched Dominic's [Zamprogna, Dante Falconeri, General Hospital] show while I was judging, and he had a great show. So I'm not going to hold my breath; I'll just wait and see who gets it!
