The Sinner has been renewed for a third season, and Guiding Light star Matt Bomer (ex-Ben Reade) has been cast as a lead opposite series star Bill Pullman.

USA has picked up a third season of its thriller series The Sinner, and soap opera alum Matt Bomer (ex-Ben Reade, Guiding Light) has been plucked to play the show's new lead.

Deadline reports that Bomer will be joining Bill Pullman, who is reprising his role as Detective Harry Ambrose, on the crime drama based on the novel of the same name by German crime writer Petra Hammesfahr.

The Sinner was originally ordered as an eight-episode, "close-ended" series that delved into the past of a troubled young mother (Jessica Biel) who fatally stabbed a man during a beach outing but had no memory of why she committed the crime. Season two starred Pullman alongside Carrie Coon and followed Ambrose as he returned to his hometown after a thirteen-year-old boy confessed to poisoning a couple.

Season three of The Sinner will follow Ambrose as he begins a routine investigation of a tragic car accident on the outskirts of Dorchester in upstate New York. Ambrose uncovers a hidden crime that pulls him into the most dangerous and disturbing case of his career. Bomer will play the character of Jamie, an upstanding Dorchester resident and expectant father who looks to Ambrose for support in the wake of the car accident.

Bomer starred as Guiding Light's Ben from 2002 to 2003 before going on to find success on primetime series like Chuck and White Collar. In addition to The Sinner, the daytime alum is also set for a lead role in DC Universe's upcoming live-action drama Doom Patrol and has a season-long arc on NBC's Will and Grace as McCoy Whitman, a news anchor who is Will's (Eric McCormack) love interest.
