Days @ soapcentral.com

Philip Kiriakis and Chloe Lane

I don't understand what Dena Higley is doing to my two favorite characters on Days of Our Lives. They share a rich history on the show and are both intelligent, independent, strong people. Why not use the natural chemistry that Jay Kenneth Johnson and Nadia Bjorlin have together and create a great love story for the characters of Philip Kiriakis and Chloe Lane? They are Supercouple material and the future of the show. They  have a strong fanbase and following online.

Right now they are both acting out of character and Dena Higley has degraded Chloe to a brunette version of Nicole Walker. Chloe always had class and sophistication and would never sleep with her boyfriend's half brother, no matter what the circumstances were. If Chloe was going to be with anyone besides Philip, for a short period of time, why not pair her with EJ DiMera, who she has much more in common with.

I think it's a waste to pair Philip with Morgan, a character who has no history or family ties on Days of Our Lives and who isn't a strong match for Philip. She is a naive, overly emotional child and has no place in the world of ruthless businessmen Philip lives in.

I will not watch Dena Higley destroy my favorite couple on Days of Our Lives, Phloe. I will not watch her Summer of Lust and I will Tune Out the Blackout and I hope that others who feel the same way will do the same.

Just my opinion

OLTL Nash death was an accident no one pushed him, shoved him or other wise, JarHead as much as I dislike him didn't mean for him to be killed . Jared and Natalie are not murderers.

Bree Williamson is amazing this week.

I am not looking forward to another round of Tess the mess. The poor baby may not stand a chance.

GH Umm Robin  needs to think of some other examples like people who wish they had known their fathers. .......AND Robin you yourself didn't know until you were about 7 ,that your mother was Anna ,now what if she had never told you and kept you refering to her as "Luv"  something to think about.

I really don't like it when more than one character is pregnant on a soap ,it usually means a death and or switch is to come. GH Carly/Robin maybe it won't happen since Robin is farther along.

OLTL Jess Tess /Starr......... Please no.

AMC: Greenlee I was glad for her return but enough already, your a selfish fool .

Days: I Never thought I would say it, but poor Nicole,I feel for her.

Emmy Extravaganza- Hits!

Emmy Hits!

Tony and I assembled a bang-up team of experts on all things TV to rate how people looked, acted, and won at the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.  Ok, so it was just the two of us, but what we lack in actual knowledge, we make up for in passion!  Read on to hear who we picked as the best of the best.

Best Dressed Male

Laurisa (on Days): My vote goes to Thaao Penghlis.  He dressed like he came there to win and I thought he looked great.  He looked sophisticated without looking stuffy and fun without looking careless.  Of course, when you have a leading lady as beautiful as Leann Hunley on your arm, you better bring the good style to match!

Laurisa (in general): This is kind of a shock for me, but I’m going with Jason Cook (Matt Hunter, General Hospital)!  He did everything against my taste.  He was scruffy, and I like clean shaven.  He wore a bright colored tie, which always screams politician to me.  But, when he walked out on that stage, I had a stop and stare moment.  Jason looks all grown up and age agrees with our little Shawn D!

Tony (on Days): Whereas James Scott probably could’ve worn a burlap sack with a bow tie and made it work, I gave him my vote anyway. He always has an air of sophistication and class, but looked especially regal for the big event. Sure, we’re used to seeing E.J. in a suite provided by the wardrobe department, but this was James’ pick and he did well!

Tony (in general): I thought Montel Williams looked great! His suite was very classy, yet simple – perfect for the Emmys. I also liked his tie. It was the ideal combo for a guy who comes across very sincere. A+ to you Monetl!

Bested Dressed Female

Laurisa (on Days): Nadia Bjorlin.  On an evening where so many ladies tried and FAILED MISERABLY to wear white, Nadia totally pulled it off.  She really made me think of the classic movie stars.  She was part Jean Harlow and part Sophia Loren.  Nadia literally looked like she had been dipped in diamonds and crystals.  Beautiful!

Laurisa (in general): Debbi Morgan (Dr. Angie Hubbard, All My Children).  She got her outfit all kinds of right.  The fit was very flattering, yet it looked still comfortable!  Her jewels were a good accent without overpowering.  But, the hands-down thing that sealed the deal for me was that AMAZING cobalt blue color.  It’s was basically a crime to Darnell Williams and Cornelius Smith that they had to stand next to her for so long.

Tony (on Days): Although Leann Hunley looked radiant, Tamara Braun was my Emmy winner when it came to Days’ fashion. She had a great fusion of old school Hollywood glamor meets a Greek goddess. In a sea of white dresses this year, many of which should have stayed on the sales rack, she wore one as it should have been worn – simple, sleek and sexy.

Tony (in general): Sure, she’s on Days, but Shelley Henning stood out amongst all of the other daytime divas. Her black and white patterned dress verged on being “too much,” but she pulled it off! It was young and fun, yet elegant enough for the awards. She was also smart by simply wearing her hair down and accenting it all with a tiny, red clutch. Shelley may not have been nominated for anything this year, but, in my eyes, she was an Emmy outfit winner!

Best Dressed Duo

Laurisa (on Days): I'm cheating a little bit on this one, but Judi Evans looked fabulous.  Great hair, appropriate make-up, stylish jewels, and a flattering dress is a great blue color.&reminded me of Princess Di. But the thing that pushed her over the edge was her gorgeous date, her 12 year old son. He looked absolutely dapper and so proud of his mom.

Laurisa (in general): My vote goes to Regis and Joy Philbin.  Joy took a page out of Debbi Morgan’s Book-O-Color and picked a wonderful royal purple dress that complimented her red hair and fair skin beautifully!  Regis looked properly coiffed and polished in a great suit and black tie.  They just looked like genuinely happy people.  Any why should they be?  Regis has been on TV for 326 years and he got the “Lifetime Achievement” Award!

Tony (on Days): My duo is actually a trio as it didn’t get any hotter than Nadia Bjorlin, Alison Sweeney and Arianne Zuker! Seriously, when they came out to present an award it was like seeing the Charlie’s Angels of Soapland – great hair, great clothes and killer smiles. The greenish color on Alison looked amazing, Nadia just looked all shades of Hollywood glam in her beaded gown and Arianne simply rocked the simple black dress and the up do! Days needs to work in a ball or some special event so we can see these ladies all dressed up again soon!

Tony (in general): Brandon Buddy and Kristen Alderson (Cole Thornhart and Starr Manning, One Life to Live) looked great together! Both were dressed age appropriate with a touch of daytime sexiness. Kristen especially shined in her outfit and proved that our little girl is all grown up (she started playing Starr ten years ago when she was seven)!  If they’re any indication of the future of soaps we should all be in good shape!

Best Acceptance Speech

Laurisa: I’m going with Ellen Degeneres.  Everything she said, I believed.  She was genuinely honored to win.  And, despite the fact that she’s quick headed for “Oprah Land” Ellen really is shocked every time that she’s recognized for how cool she really is.

Tony: Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor , The Young and The Restless) gave a speech that simply rocked! It was heartfelt, funny and not too long! In my book, those are three winning qualities more people should shoot for when they’re at the podium.

Best Reaction to an Award

Laurisa: Tom Pelphrey.  It seems cliché to say that the award meant a lot to him after the recent death of his father, but it did.  And I could tell.  Good for you, Tom!  You make us all proud!

Tony: Again I would have to go with Jeanne Cooper! She seemed so sincere and humbled to win. And I think she was as surprised as the rest of us as she was a semi-underdog because most people seemed to have their money on her co-star Michelle Stafford. But I think it’s awesome she won (even if it disproved my prediction) because to give fresh and awesome performances worthy of an Emmy after 35 years in the same role is pretty amazing.

Best On Stage Surprise (Could be a reunion, a joke, or a prop)

Laurisa: The Shelle 1.0 reunion!  I have a special place in my heart for Kirsten Storms and Jason Cook.  When they were announced as a couple again, I cheered for all those lucky GH fans that get to witness the chemistry that is not Shelle, but “Kirson” (Kirsten + Jason).

Tony: I loved the opening! More so I loved Sherri Shepherd’s journey through Pine Valley. She was absolutely hysterical! To top it off, Susan Lucci sneaking out of the jail cell was priceless. La Lucci not only has an Emmy, but a great sense of humor too!

Best Camera Pan Surprise (Whoa!  Did you see who was in the audience?!?)

Laurisa: I didn’t have a big shock.  But, I do think that the best camera pan was when the camera caught Kristoff St John’s little daughter standing up on her chair, watching her dad accept his award. She was just a little girl who thinks that her dad is Superman- just like every little girl should.

Tony: You know, I didn’t have many major “wow, I can’t believe they were there moments” this year. It seemed like the regular daytime crowd, minus a few Days cast members I can’t believe weren’t there *cough Deidre Hall* Maybe I just missed her.

Best Presenter(s)

Laurisa: I thought that Farah Fath and Jean Paul did the near impossible.  They made one of those awkward pre-scripted banter skits actually funny.  Beautiful, talented, funny….  never mind, I hate them.

Tony: Although I loved seeing my Days’ girls, Nadia, Ali and Arianne, I thought it was a nice treat to see Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann (Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer, As The World Turns) present an award together. It proved that times are changing for the better and super couples no longer have to be solely Ken and Barbie – they can be Ken and Ken or Barbie and Barbie! Side note: Van’s orange was a little much though, but at least he’d be safe while jogging at night in his tux.

Best Underdog Win

Laurisa: I’ll come right out and say that this category was supposed to be for Rachel Melvin.  Darn it though, I’m proud to give my vote to Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor, Young and the Restless).  She’s the longest tenured actress on YR, she’s a feisty as can be, and she’s never won an Emmy!  Until now…..that is.

Tony: Rachel Ray beat Ellen and The View for Best Talk Show (Entertainment)?! Say what!? That was pretty shocking. I would have picked Jeanne Cooper again, but I didn’t want to be redundant!

TiVo Award (You didn’t watch it before, but after the Emmy’s you gotta check it out)!

Laurisa: One Life to Live. First, if the show is half as good as their montage reel, I think I may have to add another member to my “Season Pass” family.  Second, they won for writing which is super cool.  Third, Jean Paul is on that show and he’s all sorts of dreamy.

Tony: Although I have my hands full with Days,  I’m totally interested in checking out One Life to Live a little more and perhaps As The World Turns. I do tend to  flip to All My Children a lot, but usually zone out after that. However, I may need to start power booking my DVR.

So that's the "Hits"!  Of course, we couldn't be all hugs and rainbows.  Nope.  Tony and I had some not-so-favorites too.  Head over to Tony's Blog to check out our "Emmy Misses".    Be sure to leave feedback to let us know what you think!

Cheers,
Laurisa

Emmy Misses!

Worst Dressed Male

Laurisa (on Days): Bryan Dattilo.  What the holy heck was his stylist thinking?  The guy is not that tall to begin with, so why would you put him in a jacket that makes his legs look even shorter?  He’s a very attractive, funny guy.  But this look made me laugh a little too much.

Laurisa (in general): Van Hansis (Luke Snyder, As The World Turns) reminded me of Jack Skellington in “The Nightmare Before Christmas”   And no, I don’t mean in a good way.

Tony (on Days): He did look good, but Thaao Penghlis’ suite disappointed me a little. Sure, it was standard awards show garb, yet I expected him to have a little more panache. An ascot perhaps or something a little distinctive – something worthy of a count.  Then again after seeing some of the other outfits, maybe playing it safe wasn’t so bad after all (please see Exhibit A: Worst Dressed Male (in general)).

Tony (in general): Whether is was leather or pleather, Anthony Geary’s (Luke Spencer, General Hospital) getup was just all shades of wrong. I respect the man, he’s a great actor and can pretty much do what he wants, but his clothing looked as if it would melt under hot lights. Not a good thing in the LA sun.

Worst Dressed Female

Laurisa (on Days): Tony’s going to kill me for this…..I picked Shelley Hennig!  I just didn’t like it.  The plunging neckline looked horribly uncomfortable (I’d be self conscious all night) and there’s no way she can sit in that dress.  I also didn’t like the way that her skin was so shinny it looked like her breast bone was covered in turtle wax.  At least I liked her red clutch!

Laurisa (in general): Tyra Banks.  I disliked everything about her look.  First, her skin, hair, and dress were essentially all the same color which did not look good on camera.  Second, the structure of her dress almost reminded me of a multi-piece window treatment.  Third, and most importantly, she knows better!!  We’re talking about a woman who is one of the most beautiful women on the planet.  For being a super model, her outfit was anything but super.

Tony (on Days): This hurts because I love Suzanne Rogers, but her Emmy garb was a little too “Sex and The City.” Whereas she’s normally the picture perfect example of elegance, her black dress with the oversized flower just seemed a little too young for her perhaps. It wasn’t bad, just not for her – she doesn’t need a lot of hoopla to make something work, she’s a pretty woman and I think a simpler dress would have worked a little better for her.

Tony (in general): Wow! Who ever told Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman, The Young and the Restless) that her outfit looked great before she left the house needs to apologize to her. White dresses were plentiful, too plentiful, but her getup managed to easily nab my pick for the “Worst Dressed.” The necklace was too gaudy, the cut of her dress made her look top heavy and the fur! The fur!? She looked like a linebacker for some Icelandic football … AKA – not good.

Worst Dressed Duo

Laurisa (on Days):  Rachel Melvin and her invisible Emmy.  Rachel looked beautiful dressed in gold.  Unfortunately, he best accessory some how alluded her.

Laurisa (in general):  I don’t mean any disrespect, but Kassie DePaiva and Michael Easton (Blair Cramer and John McClain, One Life to Live) were not a good looking fashion duo.  The thing is, I didn’t like either of their looks individually.  She wore a 1980’s inspired white wrap dress that was missing the shoulder pads.  He wore a suit that would make Sonny Crockett jealous.  Surely someone told them that they were presenters and had to appear on stage, at the same time….right?

Tony (on Days): I’m not being nice, because you probably all know I rarely am, but I didn’t see any Days couple that made me cringe. Salem was styling this year! Next year they will even look better as the show will be nominated for Best Daytime Drama … ok, a guy can dream!

Tony (in general): Could Sherri Shepherd be considered a duo as she changed her outfits a few times throughout the night? I love her, she’s great, but her first gown, the blue number, looked like something out of Sue Ellen Ewing’s closet from the 80’s. It just didn’t work on her in my opinion. The next one wasn’t so bad, but her hair looked all over the place. Finally, by the third outfit, she looked great, well, better.

Biggest Acceptance Speech Oversight (someone forgetting to thank their spouse, on screen partner, etc.)

Laurisa:  Did anyone else hear Regis thank Kelly or Kathy Lee?  Me either.  I know that he’s done a lot outside of “Live with Regis and (insert name here)”, but that’s pretty much how everyone knows him.   Some love for his co-hosts might have been cool.

Tony: Gina Tognoni (Dinah Marler, The Guiding Light) totally pulled a Hillary Swank and forgot to thank her significant other – whoops! At least she corrected it quickly, that should have saved her from sleeping on the couch.

Biggest Oversight (how did that person not win?)

Laurisa:  Rachel Melvin.  I don’t care that Jennifer Landon had to give away a baby.  I’d like to see her try to come back from the dead after being buried in a swamp!  Grr….three years in a row….whatever…how about SHARING Jen-ster?

Tony: Not to sound all nepotistic, but Rachel Melvin was robbed. Sure, Jennifer London is great, but Melvin also packed one heck of an acting punch last year. Hopefully, with Landon off her show, our little Chelsea will be a sure thing next year!

Susan Lucci Moment (someone who was over looked….again)

Laurisa (on Days):  Alison Sweeney has never received an Emmy nomination.  Let me repeat that.  Alison Sweeney has never received an Emmy nomination.  Obviously, I’m a huge Alison Sweeney fan, so I’m a little biased.  But I just don’t get how the execs at NBC practically fall over themselves to put Alison Sweeney in almost every show in the network (she’s appeared in Fear Factor, Friends, Las Vegas, American Dreams, and hosts The Biggest Looser), yet the academy continually misses the boat.

Laurisa (in general):  “Days of our Lives” not being nominated for outstanding drama series.  Ok, that’s me just being a dreamer.  But, I thought that the show dealt with a lot of good story lines and it appealed to a very wide range of fans.  That has to count for something.

Tony (on Days): Ok, this is a Double Lucci as both Alison Sweeney and James Scott were both overlooked for an Emmy nod. 2007 was easily the year of “Ejami” and both of them even played two roles. Granted, the accents during the Colleen/Santo saga were, how do I say this nicely, bad, but ninety percent of last year seemed to focus on them, yet neither of them got a nomination? Right.

Tony (in general): Among many, many others, Kathy Brier (Marcie McBain, One Life to Live) was robbed of an Emmy nod, if not the Emmy itself. Her storyline last year was heart wrenching and she knocked her portrayal of Marcie way out of the park. As Julia Robert’s character said in Pretty Woman, “Big mistake. Big. Huge.”

Most obscure presenters (strange on stage pairing)

Laurisa: I think the strangest pairing were the hosts themselves.  Sherri Sheppard and Cameron Mathison.  I genuinely enjoy them both, but that’s an absurd amount of energy to have between two people.  Usually there’s a funny man and a straight man.  Instead, we got the energizer bunny twins and I’m not so sure that their pairing didn’t ace out some joke possibilities.

Tony: Sorry, I’m again changing a plural to a singular, but I thought Jimmy Kimmel giving Regis his Life Time Achievement Award was a little odd. He was fine, don’t get me wrong, but my first choice would have been Kelly Ripa and/or Kathy Lee. I think one or the both of them would have come across a little more meaningful perhaps.

Most overlooked category (why don’t they give an award for X?)

Laurisa:  “Outstanding Episode” This is like the answer to the Grammy’s “Best Record” award.  I think that there should be an award that is episode specific for those great soap episodes that just stick out in your head.  Think for a minute of how rare that accomplishment is.  Story lines move slow to begin with, but if that perfect storm of acting, writing, and directing actually gets together and reaches viewers at the same time, I feel like it should be rewarded.

Tony: I think they should have given an award for “Best Comedic Performance in a Daytime Drama.” Sure, it’s all about the drama, but some of the best scenes are the ones that make the audience laugh. It would have been a nice balance to all the crying and screaming shown in the reels.

Worst Pet Cause Plug (Watch my TV show!  Go Green!  Save the Unicorns! Etc.)

Laurisa: I totally second Tony’s pick for Babs’s book.  But since I want to be different, I’ll go with the continual, shall I say bitter, mentions by any person on YR that was given a microphone of how their show is #1 despite the fact that they weren’t given enough writing or directing nods.  Listen to me Young-and-Restlessers, Days is just starting to be allowed in the room.  Stop complaining that your table isn’t close enough to the stage.

Tony: God, if I had a drink for every time I heard about Barbara Walters’ dang book I would have been drunk. Wait … I did and I was, but I still didn’t have enough liquor to block out all that shameless promotion. Pick a cause, any cause … it’s not hard and probably more meaningful than making a rich woman richer. Remember when people wore colored ribbons? That was nice and meaningful.

Worst Speech Cut off (you know that music will start and some poor schmuck should have been allowed to finish their speech.

Laurisa: Judge Christina’s poor producer didn’t ever get to start talking before the music started.  Not that I’m a big Judge Christina fan, but the fact of the matter is that the academy sat them so far back in the auditorium that it took them 10 minutes to make it on stage after they won so they had zero time to talk.  Who’s fault is that, academy???

Tony: This wasn’t exactly a “Cut Off,” but more like an “It should have been cut off.” Now, I give Tyra Banks tons and tons of credit for promoting Positive Self Esteem, in a perfect world we’d all love our bodies, but I thought it was a little distasteful to use the word “ass” in an Emmy acceptance speech. I’m not a prude, I drop the f-bomb and other “not nice” words from time to time, but at the Emmys? Not so much. Time and place, Tyra, look it up.
