Are Poor Whites Being Conned?
Hey. Don't shoot the messenger. Pleases read the following article and judge for yourselves.

http://www.miamiherald.com/living/columnists/leonard_pitts/story/544738.html

I did make reference to this topic in a previous blog. Here is the quote taken from:  "Lookout, Obama! The Republicans Are Coming After Ya!"

"It wasn't so long ago Hillary Clinton targeted the working class voters, whom she considered uneducated. Was she targeting them because she thought that they were ignorant and stupid? They were so gullible that they would believe every single thing that Hillary Clinton told them. She played the race card, and the people who had racism on their minds from the get go, used that as an excuse to vote for Hillary Clinton. They used the Rev Wright issue as an excuse to vote for Hillary Clinton. Well, if you read between the lines, most voters in West Virginia voted for Hillary Clinton because of race. The Clintons used the race card to evoke those dormant feelings in the voters. There was no surprise there."

Please read the article above and forum your own conclusions.

Have a lovely day, all.

Just when you thought you'd seen everything
I've seen some oddish things in my time: ostrich burgers, water buffalo yogurt, soup bowls made of cornstarch, solar-powered vibrators, and baskets made out of recycled chopsticks. But this has to take the cake:

http://poopoopaper.com/

That's right, folks, paper made from elephant poop! And what an audacious logo to boot!

While I admire the efforts to reduce, reuse, recycle, and I realize my aversion is entirely psychological (they process it so they're only using the grass fiber found *in* the elephant poo) I have to wonder if there are reasonable limits that this product line has crossed...

A story headline on BBC.co.uk also amused my boyfriend and I greatly: "Ships to get vomiting bug guide." We knew it had to mean something reasonable (and if you read the article you'll see it does), but what a horrible choice of headline!!! What first came to Boyfriend's mind was guidebooks to help passengers identify various species of vomiting bugs ("this is the vomiting Elmer's beetle..." etc.) and I had in my head a largeish red-and-black bug with a tour guide hat and a bull horn who had a tendency to vomit sporadically while giving tours. "And on your left you'll see --- blehhhhhhh!"

We're both a little mad, as you can see :) Maybe myself a wee bit moreso than him...

Scientists eye an enzyme as target in fighting autism

Wed Jun 27, 9:11 AM ET

US researchers have reversed the symptoms of mental retardation and autism in mice by inhibiting an enzyme that affects the connections between brain cells, researchers said Wednesday.

In a series of experiments on mice, the MIT investigators showed that they could undo the brain damage seen in a condition called Fragile X syndrome by inhibiting a key brain chemical called PAK.

In humans, Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the leading cause of mental retardation and the most common genetic cause of autism -- the complex and devastating developmental disorder that is now being diagnosed in increasing numbers of children.

The study raises the intriguing possibility that the brain damage seen in children with the condition can be rolled back and identifies a specific target for potential drug therapies.

"It opens up a new avenue for drug research to treat this condition," said Susumu Tonegawa, a neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and lead author of the paper.

MIT researchers began by creating a batch of mice that had been genetically modified to have Fragile X, a condition in which the neurons of the brain are structurally abnormal and functionally impaired compared to regular nerve cells.

These transgenic mice had many of the behavioral problems seen in kids with the condition: hyperactivity, attention deficits, repetitive behaviors and poor social skills.

The investigators then cross-bred these mice with another batch of mice that had been genetically modified to inhibit the activity of the PAK (p21-activated kinase) enzyme which is instrumental in shaping the formation of neuronal connections in the brain.

The researchers knew that when PAK was inactivated, the mice developed neurons that had short, fat dendritic spines, with a higher-than-usual capacity for relaying the electrical impulses that pass between brain cells.

In other words, the shape and function of the dendritic spines in the PAK mice was just the reverse of those seen in the brain cells of the mice with Fragile X syndrome.

The researchers gambled that the two abnormalities would cancel each other out, and that's exactly what the experiment showed.

The cross-bred mice had been genetically engineered so that the inactivation of the PAK enzyme began two weeks into the mouse's life cycle, which in human terms would be several years after birth.

Tests and autopsies showed that the PAK-blocking action restored electrical communication between neurons in the brains of the double mutant mice, correcting their behavioral abnormalities in the process.

"This is very exciting because it suggests that PAK inhibitors could be used for therapeutic purposes to reverse already established mental impairments in fragile X children," said Eric Klann, a professor at New York University's Center for Neural Science.

The study was conducted by Tonegawa and a postdoctoral student at MIT's Picower Institute for Learning and Memory and appears in this week's edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

NUTS Campaign for Jericho is breaking records!

What happens when a network encourages viewers to try alternative methods of television viewing but then pulls the plug when a show doesn't get traditional ratings? The Jericho phenomenon. Now estimated to be the largest fan campaign ever, the Save Jericho movement has garnered national attention. Coverage has been featured on "E"'s Watch With Kristen, Us Weekly, LA Times, Tv Guide online, and many other national outlets. The NUTS campaign, based on a term used in the season finale taken from WW2 (Not Understanding Term Surrender) involves devoted fans sending nuts to CBS studios. Thus far, one New Jersey based online nut distributor, www.nutsonline.com, has sent as of this writing 6444 lbs of nuts. It has also been reported that several other retailers of nuts have also had record sales recently, and the CBS mailroom has begun to resemble a Peter Pan peanut butter factory. Why did one small show with terrible ratings have such determined and devoted fans? Because CBS used an antiquities ratings system to determine Jericho was a flop. Jericho was one of the first shows to offer next day showings for free online and also to be purchased on Itunes. They set up an interactive message board and encourage a thriving online community, but failed to take these methods of enjoying the show into account when they tallied ratings. Add that to the huge hiatus they took over the winter which caused a hemorrhage of viewers, and you now are familiar with the worst case of show destroying in recent history. CBS has begun to backpedal in recent days, trying to placate fans with promises of some kind of closure. Fans are not going to settle for a two hour movie, I am afraid. They are demanding a second season, no less. NUTS to a two hour movie is the battlecry on many a message board. If you want to check out history in the making, check out the Jericho counter at www.nutsonline.com , www.cbs.com/jericho and check out the message boards, and lastly,   http://jericholives.com/mission.htm , the official board for the Save Jericho campaign.

Update: nutsonline has shipped 10655 lbs of nuts, all but 200 to CBS New York studios!
