Bringing Up Baby: Chelsea's Infertility

Choosing not to have children is one thing.  But, physically not being able to have kids is a complete tragedy.  It’s unfair to any man or woman who has to go through it.  So, I don't want to see like I'm sensationalizing infertility.  But, in the realm of Soap Operas, Days may have found a very interesting way to develop a story line around the condition.   The writers can do a lot with the story because they picked the perfect character to play it and it is a story line with multiple layers.

First, Chelsea’s never been one of those characters who talked about growing up and having a big family.   She was certainly missing a sympathy chip during the Artimus and Demarquete story line.  And, she grew up as an only child.  So, we get to see the story line evolve from the beginning.  The very first time that Chelsea ever thought about having children is the moment when she found out that she couldn’t.

Then there’s her family.  I loved the way Bo immediately knew that Chelsea would be at the hospital and went to comfort her.  It reminded me of the scene a few weeks ago between Chelsea and Hope.  My heart really breaks for Chelsea.  Rachel Melivn, Peter Reckell, and Kristian Alfonso have the potential to bring such depth to this story line.   Hi-fives for all three of them!

Next, I know I’m asking too much, but if the writers actually remember history correctly, Chelsea Brady was once Chelsea Benson- the happily adopted daughter of loving parents who did not give birth to her.  Chelsea always speaks very highly of the Bensons and by all indication, had nothing less than a wonderful life with her adopted parents.    Eventually, she should get to the realization that infertility doesn’t automatically equal no family.

Finally, there's the possibility of having a surrogate carry her child.  By the time Chelsea finds the right guy, Ciara will probably have been SORASed enough to carry her half sister's baby.  That's a SL that has "soap opera" written all over it.  Especially if they are in love with the same man!!  (Sorry, I can only be serious for a short amount of time :) )

Let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Laurisa

A Budding Love Triangle?
Shawn, Rachel and Blake.JPG hosted for free by ImageShack

As spring is rapidly approaching a lot of things come to mind. Cleaning, April showers bringing May flowers and, of course, love always seems to be much more abundant in the air this time of year. Whereas my next statement may not score me any points, I have to admit that Dr. Dan and Chelsea’s budding flirtation was fun to watch! Even Kate, Salem’s Official Welcome Wagon, didn’t pounce as she picked up on the sparks too! It was actually funny that Grammy Kate was playing “wingman” and got the scoop on his love life. But, before we pick names like “Chan” or “Dansea,” lets look at some potential roadblocks.

First, there’s the May/December aspect. To me, his laid back, surfer dude attitude sort of makes him less threatening and balances out the age factor. Besides, whereas Chelsea shows moments of naivety, she’s certainly lived a very chaotic life so far. That alone has scored her a few “wise beyond her years” points. Those facts made me lower the red flag a little.

Next, I pondered the detail that Chelsea is going through a horribly bad time right now. Yet, so far, Dr. Dan doesn’t seem like the type that will take advantage of that – actually, I don’t think Victor would let him! From his brief statements regarding what he knows about his father and Victors’ business dealings, he understands how ruthless they can be. Therefore I doubt he would cross him and that made me lower the red flag a little more.

Then, I thought about Nick and the red flag hasn’t moved an inch since. I felt a little sad and, perhaps hypocritical, stating the above notion of a Chelsea/Dr. Dan pairing seems fun as I’ve always been a big Chelsea and Nick fan. Yet, between not seeing them together a lot recently and considering their long, turbulent history, my adoration for them has sort of waned a little and it got me thinking about their relationship.

Whereas they have been a lot of “firsts” for each other, I feel, to some extent, they’ve outgrown one other. Part of their initial charm was that they were both in awkward places back then. Chelsea was trying to put her life back together and, as always, dealing with tons of drama and Nick was, well, just awkward, especially when it came to women. Together and independently, they’ve both grown leaps and bounds since then and I’m not sure if their newfound maturities are making them work as a couple anymore. Perhaps a couple of good friends would be a better fit for them?

Finally, I recognized the fact that, like Sami, Chelsea will always have a stubborn, spontaneous streak and needs a man who can spar with her as an equal. I’m not 100% sure if Nick has many more rounds left in him before he’s K.O.’ed by her personality. Although supportive, he rarely stands up for himself and has gone along with all of her crazy schemes, often at his own expense. Whereas that shows his love and devotion to some extent, he can’t always be a doormat and, whether it’s “Good Chelsea” or “Bad Chelsea,” more than likely that’s what he’ll always be with her on some level. I’ve witnessed several relationships where one member dominated the other and that’s far from a healthy balance.

However, before I pledge my eternal devotion to either camp and, out of respect for my former total Nick and Chelsea loyalty, I’m going to stay tuned to Days to see what happens! I’d love to see some new Nick and Chelsea interaction to remind me of why I fell for them in the first place. Yet, if Dr. Dan continues to be a smooth operator, I might just have to keep lowering the red flag. Then again if he turns out to be a creep, I may have some groveling to do!
